What is BLOG

For many years that passed, many things have change in terms of fashion, life style, beliefs, traditions, cultures, politics, economics, and technology. We can’t be stopped by exploring our curiosity. We always move forward, we discovered new things and improve it.

Juts like dairy, ledger, daybook, journal, and now it became Weblog or Blog. Before we go back to the history of blog, let us first discuss abut the difference. We all know that dairy, ledger, daybook or journals are;

A daily written record of (usually personal) experiences and observations

A periodical dedicated to a particular subject

A ledger in which transactions have been recorded as they occurred

A record book as a physical object

The part of the axle contained by a bearing

And the tools that we used of it are paper and a pen.

While Blog is a personal journal published on the web. A weblog or blog for short can take many forms. Some are online scrapbooks, for pasting links and quotes from items found on the web; many act as personal diaries, often illustrated with digital snapshots; and some are more like digital soapboxes, providing a platform for airing opinions and commentary, either about the world at large or on a specialist interest. Some of these formats have been adapted for commercial publishing or marketing, or as a knowledge management tool, and other business adaptations have been suggested. The unifying theme is that the user (known as a blogger) adds entries using a simple online form in their browser, while the weblog publishing software takes care of formatting the page layout and creating archive pages, RSS feeds and other supporting functions. Most of all weblog or blog is more on public unlike diaries or ledgers they keep on private. And the computer is the tool for weblog or blogging.

The History of Blog - Berner-Lee

Knowing the history of blog is important because some how it gives as guidance, courage, beliefs, and additional knowledge. You should know that everything that's been happening in the present is the result of what happened in the past. If you want to understand what's going on, you have to have some knowledge what went on before.

Always remember knowledge is power! And we must use this power correctly and wisely.

Many of us argued regarding the origin or history of blog and how this thing evolved. But anyway, here’s some scoop that I’ve discovered on the web

The first weblog was the first website info.cern.ch, that built by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN (Conseil Européenne pour la Recherche Nucléaire).

1989 Tim Berners-Lee invented the web browser or browser-editor

1990 of May, The browser-editor that created by Berners-Lee was named World Wide Web. The goal is to developing a tool to make the Web a creative space to share and edit information and build a common hypertext.

Hypertext is a way of presenting information online with connections between one piece of information and another, which enabled you to explore additional or related information throughout the online documentation.

After a year, Robert Cailliau team up with Berners-Lee and sooner became its number one advocate and the first web surfer.

1992 Tim Berners-Lee first posted a web page at CERN that kept a list of all new web sites as they come online.

The History of Blog - Andreesen and Bina

The University of Illinois' National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), one of the five original centers in the National Science Foundation's Supercomputer Centers Program, it was formed in January 1986 and it was founded by the faculty members of the university, led by Larry Smarr. The NCSA has contributed significantly to the birth and growth of the worldwide cyberinfrastructure. NCSA works with universities and colleges, government agencies, companies and schools to discover the benefits of cyberinfrastructure.

1993 Marc Andreessen and Eric Bina, created the Mosaic at NCSA

Mosaic is the first popular graphical browser for the World Wide Web and was release to the public at the same year. The graphical browser gave the internet users to easy access to multimedia sources of information and sharing or exchange of information

Before, the files were just written by hand or in type writer and stored in a cabinet or vault but it will not take a long years to preserve, and the file can also turn into dust. Nowadays, most of the important information or secret information files of a company and government are saved in the computer because it takes a hundred years or even more just to keep these files for future use. But it’s a highly risk against the cyber attack.

Today, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) is recognized as an international leader in deploying robust high-performance computing resources and they’re developing new computing, software technologies, tools, and techniques to improve national cyber security and to help law enforcement better respond to cyber attacks, the attacker person are what we called hacker

In June at the same year, The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) started a what’s new list of sites notably the site provided entries sorts by date and the what’s new links included commentary. This service was eventually taken over by Netscape in what becomes one of the more popular web sites of its time.

The History of Blog - Justin Hall

Justin Hall

Justin Hall is one of the first web blogger and web diarists (Internet-based-diarist). Hall was born on December 16, 1974 in Chicago, Illinois. He is a freelance journalist and graduate student in interactive media at the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television

1994 of January, when Hall was in his sophomore year at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, Hall launched the Justin’s Home Page which would later become Justin’s Links from the Underground, which offered one of the earliest guided tours of the web. Later on, the site came to focus on Hall's life in intimate detail

1996 of January 10, Hall commences writing an online journal with dated daily entries, although each daily post is linked by through an index page.

Hall posted more than 4,800 pages of postings with different categories like his life, about the relationship with his father, travel, arts, science, romantic dating, video films, games, and more.

2004 of December, The New York Time Magazines referred to him as the founding father of personal blogging

Today, Just Hall was a regular participant-observer with the Indie Game Jam, and currently working his project which is the Passively Multiplayer Online Gaming(PMOG)

Dave Winer

Dave Winer was born in town of Brooklyn, New York on May 2 1955. Winer is graduated in 1978 with the degree MS, Computer Science at University of Wisconsin, a Bachelor's in Mathematics from Tulane University and currently lives in Berkeley, California. He is a software developer, entrepreneur, and pioneered in several areas in Internet standards like XML-RPC co-author with Microsoft, RSS 0.91 co-author with Netscape, OPML 1.0 sole author, SOAP 1.1 co-author with Microsoft and IBM, and sole author in RSS 0.92 and RSS 2.0 base on RSS 0.91 with Netscape

1981-1988, Winer lunched the first outliners such as ThinkTank, Ready and More.

1994, Winer started DaveNet, a personally column, first of its kind and it’s a popular commentary channel.Read by the leading thinkers in software, networking and tech finance. It was distributed via email and thru out worldwide web.

1996 of February, Dave Winer writes a weblog that chronicles the 24 Hours of Democracy Project. In April, Winer launches a news page for users of Frontier Software,

1997, The Frontier Software that Winer lunched, it became Scripting News, one of the oldest and longest weblogs remaining on the net today.

1999, the company he heads, My.Userland .com goes on to release Radio Userland, one of the first blogging software tools.

The History of Blog - Jorn Barger

Jorn Barger

Jorn Barger was born in Yellow Spring Ohio in 1953. He programmed games and educational software for Commondore 65, Apple II, and Atari 800. Barger invented theoretical methodology that demanded hypothesis to be expressed as computer simulations or by analyzing literary description of human behavior. This method was called "cybernetic psychology" or best known as "Robot Wisdom".

1997 of December, Barger began posting comments and links on this website which is the Robot Wisdom. He also introduced the term weblog, which means the process of logging in the web. And one of his works are:

"Issues literate weblog section" (July 1998)

"What will your hardrive hold in ten years?" and "Yet another financial crisis" (December 200)

"Timeline of James Joyce's life" (May 2001)

"Judaism timeline" (March 2002)

"Logarithmic of the universe" (March 2005)

As of 2007 of April, Barger is in El Dorado, Arkansas, and most days can be found hanging out at the Barton library.
